Innovation Center gaining attention

The 38,000-square-foot Innovation Center, located in the Whitewater University Technology Park, has earned an “Excellence in Economic Development” honorable mention from the International Economic Development Council.

The IEDC includes more than 4,500 members across many different countries, including the United States, Canada, Europe, Australia and New Zealand.

The Innovation Center, which is located in the Whitewater University Technology Park, recently received an honor from the International Economic Development Council.

According to a press release, “recognition is given only to projects that show direct economic benefit to the community, such as creating jobs and increasing the tax base.”

Chancellor Richard Telfer said he was excited about the potential of the park.

“The Innovation Center will be a nurturing, start-up place for new technologies,” Telfer said in the press release. “Inventors and entrepreneurs will get the opportunity to advance their ideas. I’m proud of the partnership between the city and the university that made this project a reality.”

Ronald “Bud” Gayhart, the director of the Center for Innovation and Business Development at UW-Whitewater, said in a release that the Innovation Center fits that bill.

“It will give people reasons to stay in southeast Wisconsin, give them occupations, a place to locate their businesses,” Gayhart said in the release. “There’s limitless potential.”

The Innovation Center is expected to employ many graduates, Gayhart said in the release.

Whitewater City Manager Kevin Brunner said the park and Innovation Center show the great relationship between the city and university.

“We’re very flattered to be recognized. It speaks volumes about the great working relationship between the city and university,” Brunner said in the press release. “In two short years, we’ve gone from an idea to finishing construction.”

UW-Whitewater, the city of Whitewater and the Whitewater Community Development Authority worked together on the park project.
