Minor injury, $150,000 damages in Tri Sigma house fire

By Ben Holzhueter and Samantha Jacquest

March 14, 2014

A fire occurred on the first floor of the UW-Whitewater Tri Sigma sorority house located at the corner of Main and S. Prairie St. in the morning hours of March 14. No major injuries were reported, but one occupant was taken to Mercy Hospital in Janesville as a precautionary measure, Whitewater Fire Capt. Joe Uselding said.

The cause of the fire has not yet been determined. Uselding said he estimates the damage to the house at $150,000 or more.

“There’s a lot of smoke damage throughout the house,” Uselding said. “There’s one lower section of the house that has most of the fire damage.”

All occupants were reported out of the residence upon arrival. One female was evaluated by paramedics and received oxygen. Around 25 students live in the sorority house. Officials and the property owner are working to provide housing and assistance to the displaced students.
