When the going gets tough, the tough get going. That was the case for the Warhawks this past Saturday, defeating UW-Stout, 180.025-178.5.
The ’Hawks (3-0) will host UW-Eau Claire at 4 p.m. Saturday. The meet is designated as Breast Cancer Awareness Night and Alumni Day.
Struggling early against UW-Stout, the ’Hawks had someone step up when it was needed.
“We struggled a bit on bars and beam, but really pulled it together on vault and floor,” head coach Jennifer Regan said.
Sophomore Katie Thompson finished first in all-around competition with a score of 35.975, and tied for the top spot on bars with a score of 9.1.
Senior Allison Nelson tied for first place in vault, scoring a 9.425. Sophomore Mary Kate Young led the floor exercise with a second place finish, scoring a 9.475.
“There was one person in each event that made a difference; Thompson on bars, Nelson on vault and Young on floor,” Regan said. “On beam it was freshman Kaitlyn Weber.”
Weber scored a 9.05, good for third place overall.
Alumni will be honored during the meet and when gymnasts record a score of 9.0 or higher, a jug will be passed around for donations, supporting breast cancer awareness.
“We have been doing that for a couple years now,” Regan said. “We have had good turn outs the past couple years and we’re hoping that continues, especially in our new venue.”
