District 2 representative arrested on drug charges

Whitewater Common Council District 2 Rep. Javonni Butler, a UW-Whitewater student, was arrested and charged earlier this month with two counts of delivering THC, less than 200 grams.

According to an article from the Janesville Gazette, Butler was arrested after Walworth County sheriff’s deputies followed an informant to Butler’s apartment two times. Each time, the informant was able to buy marijuana from Butler.

Butler, a 22-year-old New Berlin native, was released on signature bond and a criminal complaint was filed Tuesday. Each count has a possible $10,000 fine and up to three years and six months in prison, the Gazette said.

Butler was elected to be the District 2 representative, which includes the university campus, with five write-in votes in April. After being appointed the representative last year, Butler failed to file his papers to be on the ballot in time, forcing him to run as a registered write-in candidate.

The Gazette said it is unclear whether charges will affect Butler’s status with the university or the city council.
