To me, it seems like Valentine’s Day has gotten increasingly difficult for couples to genuinely celebrate because of the constant scrutiny they seem to be under by the single population. Many couples even decide not to make plans  in fear of being too cliche.

Single guys and girls are constantly criticizing relationships as superficial, expensive and a waste of time. Yet it seems to me half of the people who say things like this have at one point been in a relationship or will be in one at some point in their lives.

I’ve come to the conclusion that the people who denounce Valentine’s Day and ultimately relationships in general, are actually the people who want to be in an honest relationship the most.

If you’re one of these people, instead of whining about how lame and expensive Valentine’s Day is this year, why not actually put yourself out there and try finding a date for the big day. The perfect opportunity for those looking for a date in a hurry: SEAL will host Speed Dating at 7 p.m. Friday in the University Center Old Main Ballroom.

Student Entertainment Awareness Leagure intern and junior Britta Svoboda said the event was a success five years ago when it was first held on campus.

“We had about 24 people come in 2005 and we haven’t done it since then, but we thought we’d bring it back this year,” Svoboda said.

This year, 10 people are signed up as of now, and the last day to register is today.

For those of you who don’t have any idea how speed dating works, the event revolves around tables with a specific starting spot for each participant. You will be paired up with a person,  talk with them for 3-5 minutes, and then someone will tell you to rotate and move to the next spot. While talking with your potential dates, you will have a sheet in front of you to  take notes and write down things you liked about a person or who you’re most interested in. At the end of the event, the coordinators will collect your sheets, and look for matches. If one sheet says they were interested in so-and-so and so-and-so said the same about that person, these two will be given each others contact information.

“People have been showing excitement,” Svoboda said. “So I’m hoping for the best.”

Yes, Valentine’s Day may be an over-publicized “holiday” created by Hallmark, but who’s to say we can’t enjoy it? We are consumers by nature, and there isn’t a person I know in this world who doesn’t enjoy giving or receiving a gift.

And for all you woman-haters and man-haters out there, you can drop the stone-hearted tough-guy act. You’re human too, and we all know you’re capable of love.
