Women’s hoops making late push

The Warhawk women’s basketball team will carry a six game win-streak into the conference tournament after defeating UW-River Falls 67-61 Saturday afternoon.

Sophomore guard Mary Merg said she is looking forward to the tournament.

“Our expectations have been the same all year,” Merg said. “We want to win the conference tournament.”

Senior Jamie Swanson said she feels good about the current streak the team is on and hopes it can continue.

“Our expectation is definitely to keep it rolling and win the conference tournament,” Swanson said. “I have a lot of faith in my team, and we all know what we want and can accomplish when we work together.”

While the winning streak remains intact heading into the tournament, there are some things that could be improved before the tournament begin.

Sophomore point guard Kaitlyn Thill said she believes the team has been solid on defense and good with its rotations, but said other areas could use some work.

“We still need to improve on rebounding,” Thill said. “We have to take care of the ball and be sure of our decisions.”

Thill has helped the team reach this point by leading them in assists at 2.2 per game and in steals at 3.2 per game.

Although the team expects to win, it also hopes to make a run in the NCAA Tournament.

As of right now an invite to the NCAA Tournament is not guaranteed, but the Warhawks know the chance of an invite and making a run are still possibilities.

“I do feel we are capable,” Merg said. “I feel that we have a solid team and a deep bench.  We’ve proven this by beating other ranked teams.”

For the seniors, this is the final opportunity they will have to win a tournament title.

“We have gone through a lot this year as a team and I don’t feel like any of us are ready to be done,” Swanson said. “So we are just going to keep working hard and stay focused.”
