’Hawks go 2-2 over weekend, knock off No. 11 Elmhurst

The Warhawk women’s volleyball team, ranked No. 12 in the AVCA top 25 poll, knocked off No.11 Elmhurst College on Saturday, winning the match 3-2.

The win capped off a 2-2 weekend for the ’Hawks at the Washington University ASICS Invitational in St. Louis.

Friday saw the ’Hawks go 0-2, losing to No. 2 ranked Washington University 3-0 and No. 23 ranked Otterbein University 3-2. The fourth set in the match against Otterbein was a narrow defeat of 28-26. The ’Hawks led two sets to one before the defeat, eventually losing in the fifth set 15-6.

Head coach Stacy Boudreau said she was pleased with her team’s overall performance from the weekend.

“We would have liked to go 3-1 or 4-0 but I’m happy with how we bounced back on Saturday,” Boudreau said. “We played well and competed against high competition and we’re looking to keep improving and take it game by game.”

Junior outside hitter Kristen Ruchti said she likes where the team’s head is after eight matches.

“I think our confidence is very high right now,” Ruchti said. “We all mesh well and get along off the court. That’s important. We have a big week a head of us but we’re very confident going into it.”

With a 6-2 overall record, the ’Hawks will look to build on the momentum from Saturday’s competition today with matches against Rockford College and Carroll College. The ’Hawks are 4-0 at home this season.

This weekend, the ’Hawks travel to River Falls, Wis. for the UW-River Falls Invitational. The teams they face on Friday and Saturday are No. 7 ranked St. Thomas University, UW-Stevens Point which will be the first WIAC opponent the ’Hawks see this season, St. Scholastica University and Gustavus Adolphus College.

While the season might be in its early stages, Ruchti said the team’s goals are still lofty.

“We have high expectations for ourselves,” Ruchti said. “We want to win conference and everyone wants that national championship. I think this team can do that [because] of our experience and depth.
