Men’s Basketball: ‘Hawks now one game behind in WIAC after victory

By Daniel Schoettler

The Warhawks men’s basketball team not only avenged a previous loss from St. Norbert earlier in the year with a 63-38 victory over the Green Knights, but also got closer in the WIAC title race Saturday night.

UW-Stevens Point had lost before the ’Hawks game started, and it was key that the team took advantage of that loss to cut the Pointers’ lead in the WIAC down to one game.

“[It was a] huge win, St. Norbert is a good team,” said senior Luke Knoble. “We came out with great energy. Big region win for us and a good win for us this time of year. We have to start playing well.”

St. Norbert beat the ’Hawks 66-55 on December 30th in Green Bay, Wis.

The ’Hawks started the game with a 9-0 run. After leading 24-15 at the 5:38 mark, the ’Hawks continued to hold on to that momentum going on an 11-0 run to extend the lead to 35-15 with 27 seconds left in the half, and eventually led at halftime by a score of 35-17.

In the second half, the ’Hawks continued their momentum from the first half even though St. Norbert upped the offensive effort in the second half. The ’Hawks didn’t let that affect them as they extended their lead to twenty and held on to get the win.

Senior Luke Knoble led all Warhawks scorers with 15 points.  Sophomores Quardell Young and K.J. Evans finished with 12 points each.

“We all did our part tonight,” said Knoble. “Best team win all year.”

The Warhawks next game is this Wednesday against UW-Platteville at 7 p.m.  at the Kachel Gymnasium.
