Pitt fans invade Whitewater

February 2, 2011
Samantha Vrabel was born one, while Sam Mimier converted into one. No matter how they became Pittsburgh Steelers fans, these two UW-Whitewater students are the minorities around campus these days with the Green Bay Packers playing the Pittsburgh Steelers in Super Bowl XLV this Sunday.

Keeping the Slakstrong memory alive

January 26, 2011
Life can be so fragile. Most often, though, you don’t realize it until something fatal happens to you or a loved one. All you can do is live your life to the fullest and enjoy what’s right in front of you. Tyler Slak was doing that. But it was all taken away from him last year. Cancer took that from him.

New outlook for women’s track and field team

January 19, 2011
When thinking of powerhouse women’s track and field programs, the UW-Whitewater coaches and players know not many think of them as one. Part of the reason is that in the last three years they haven’t contended for a conference championship and have finished in the bottom-half at the year-end WIAC indoor meet. But with the new season underway, new coach Josh Ireland wants to change the perception and attitude surrounding the program.

College degree should be priority

November 22, 2010
In America, having a college education is important. You’ll typically make more money than a person who did not graduate from college. You’ll typically get selected for jobs over someone who did not earn a bachelor’s degree. But from a pure educational standpoint, is it even necessary to have a college education to hold a prestigious job? In Wisconsin, it appears its citizens do not feel a college degree is needed in order to be the leader of this state.

Raebel defeats cancer

October 27, 2010
This Homecoming will be special for AJ Raebel. Actually, all the Homecomings from here on out will be quite special for him. Raebel, who graduated in May 2009, looks at life a little different these days. “I don’t take the little things in life for granted anymore,” Raebel said. “Just things like playing catch and going for a run are gifts.”

Donovan delivers in more than one way

May 12, 2010
Jeff Donovan earned WIAC player of the year honors while leading the football team to its fifth straight conference title and its second national championship in three years. Now, less than five months later, Donovan is at the helm of the baseball team’s WIAC championship and its own run to a national championship. For his efforts in both sports, the former Wauwatosa East High School star has been named the 2009-10 Royal Purple Male Athlete of the Year.

Weyer leaves no doubt

May 5, 2010
Justine Weyer’s place in the UW-Whitewater gymnastics record books is very secure. To cap off her storied career, Weyer captured her second vault national title March 27 in Springfield, Mass. As a result of her banner season, she has been selected as the 2009-10 Royal Purple Female Athlete of the Year.

Warhawks eye WIAC title

April 28, 2010
All one could hear were the flags blowing in the wind. Silence filled the air. One would have thought the baseball team was in last place from the somber tone in the players’ voices after letting the series finale against UW-Stevens Point slip away Monday evening.

Softball team hopes to raise more money for Slakstrong

April 28, 2010
Tyler Slak was called one of the softball team’s biggest fans last year. “He came to all of our home games,” senior leftfielder Lauren Cruz said. Now, Cruz and the Warhawks are giving Slak’s family a helping hand.

Raebel has new battle

April 14, 2010
It wasn’t the news AJ Raebel wanted to hear, but he’s sure not going to stop fighting now. The former two-time All-American linebacker, who was diagnosed with testicular cancer last November, learned last week he will need to have surgery to remove his lymph nodes.

Benefit for AJ Raebel being held tonight

March 10, 2010
When the news first spread in January that AJ Raebel was diagnosed with testicular cancer, many knew that they had to help the former UW-Whitewater football player in some fashion. Many have helped through the Cure 33 Fund, but tonight inside the Kachel Gymnasium there will be another opportunity for students and community members to show their support for the two-time All-American linebacker.

Long road traveled

February 17, 2010
Dupree Fletcher counts his blessings each and every day. “By the grace of God I turned my life around,” Fletcher said. He knows, however, his life could have turned out quite differently if he didn’t change.
