The Tutt, Fischer and Knilans Leadership Involvement Team will hold a softball tournament from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday, April 27 at Starin Park.
The tournament, which is called “Save Second Base,” will aim to raise awareness and support for breast cancer research.
Maria Glorioso, assistant complex director for Fischer Hall and adviser to the event, is eager to see students get involved and support the cause.
“It’s something that I think touches everybody,” Glorioso said.
Glorioso’s grandmother battled breast cancer when she was young.
“I was really too young to remember a lot of what she was really going through,” Glorioso said. “I just remember when I was little, she was tired all the time. I wanted to play, and I just didn’t understand how much it had affected her.”
Fischer Hall is the “Wellness building” on campus, and LIT wanted to figure out a wellness-related event they could sponsor.
When it came up with this idea, Glorioso knew it would be important because of how many lives breast cancer affects.
They also were pleased with the name they created for the event, which has caught the attention of many students on campus.
“We thought it was a cheeky play on words,” Glorioso said.
In addition to creating awareness through the event, all proceeds will go to the Susan G. Komen Foundation of South Central Wisconsin.
Alyssa Jones, assistant complex director for Tutt Hall and Knilans Hall and adviser for the event, believes the fundraiser is unique from other breast cancer fundraisers in that people are more aware of where the money will be going.
“I think the nice factor is there’s a lot of different breast cancer awareness fundraisers, but ours is solely for Wisconsin,” Jones said. “I think a lot of times you’re raising money for that, but you’re not sure where the money is going.”
This is the first year the event is coming to campus, and Glorioso and Jones are hoping to get more than 100 people for the event. Glorioso said there are many graduate students who are eager to participate.
Registration for the event is open until April 19, and the cost to join is $20 per team.
