Music Review – TV on The Radio “Nine Types of Light”

Brooklyn based rockers TV On The Radio have yet again made an album filled with energy and unexpected musical genres on their new album “Nine Types Of Light.”  Unlike their last album “Dear Science,” released in 2008, “Nine Types Of Light” has a more psychedelic tone and light-hearted lyrics.

Typically focused on alternative rock, pop and funk, TV On The Radio experimented with a toned-down sound on a few songs in “Nine Types Of Light.”  Focusing less on distortion and erratic sound, the song “Repetition,” centers more on the deep wallowing voice of the singer. This helps to evoke a feeling of raw sincerity in terms of the songs content.

Other songs on the album represent their typical no boundaries, distorted sounds.  The loosely electronica based song, “New Cannonball Blues,” reflects the upbeat sound TV On The Radio usually is associated with.
This new album is largely based on love songs, which vastly differs from their traditional form. The different sounds and its distinct familiarity make for a refreshing album. Whether listening exclusively to the lyrics on unrequited love or zoning out to listen to the crazy motley tones, textures and sounds of the album.
