Some try to argue that track and field is an individual sport. However, the Warhawks are out to prove it is a team sport just like any other.

Through an injury-ridden season, the men’s track and field team has turned to its depth for support.

In fact, almost all of the events contain different season leaders for the ’Hawks.

The four exceptions include the 110-meter hurdles and triple jump, both led by sophomore Marcus Smith, and the hammer throw and discus throw, both led by senior Ben Stringer.

Coming off a strong performance at the Meet of Champions in Augustana where weather did not agree, Stringer placed first in discus and javelin and fourth in the hammer throw.

His expectations for the conference championship meet are high as he carries a lot of momentum.

“I would like to win the discus and become a national champion,” Stringer said. “I have a realistic shot.”

A repeat of his Augustana performance at the conference meet  would be very beneficial for the ’Hawks.

However, there are many other members of the team who are sure to contribute.

One person who will have a big impact on the meet for the ’Hawks is Smith, who is coming off a meet where he set a new school record in the triple jump at 15.22 meters.

This jump is currently the longest in the entire nation, leading by 12 centimeters.

“It felt good to set the new school record,” Smith said. “But I still want myself to do more. It’s a stepping stone for the year to do more.”

Stringer and Smith are just two pieces to the massive puzzle  the ’Hawks have put together in their pursuit for the program’s first conference title since 1966.

The team has found success consistently throughout the season as they have placed in the top three in six of the eight meets that scores have been kept at this season, including both of the outdoor meets.

Heading into the WIAC outdoor championship meet at UW-Platteville, the ’Hawks look to be in good position to make a run for a top finish.

“We would like to bring  home a trophy, the top four get one,” Stringer said. “I would like to take first place; we have all the talent there to take first.”
