Transfer Westcott leading the way

The Warhawk golfers found a leader this past summer. In both attitude and ability, junior transfer Nicole Westcott has given a vital boost to her team.

That trend continued at the Whitewater Fall Fling this last weekend, after Westcott finished first individually, posting a two-day total of 157, highlighted by a 77 on Friday.

Wescott was happy with how she played, but would rather have a better team finish than individually. The ‘Hawks placed third out of ten teams in the invite.

“I want the team to do well, first and foremost,” Wescott said. “I’d rather have the other girls shoot really well and we win as a team.”

So far this year the ‘Hawks have experienced some highs and lows. Recently the team has been more consistent, and head coach Brett Weber attributes that in part to the leadership of Westcott.

“Nicole always stays positive and keeps a positive outlook,” Weber said. “She’s showing our other golfers that you don’t have to be perfect to shoot a low score, and it’s showing up in the scores of the freshmen.”

Westcott, who was on a golf scholarship at UW-Green Bay, decided to transfer due in large part to the reputation of the UW-Whitewater’s business school. As an accounting major and Division one golfer, her class and golf schedules at UW-Green Bay were overwhelming.

“I was missing a lot of school at [Green Bay],” Wescott said. “I was only at school for two days a week, and it was just getting too hard to miss those classes, so that influenced my decision.”

Division-III athletics have proven to be just the right mixture of school and golf for Westcott. She said she is doing well in school, and said her professors are great. Furthermore, she is truly enjoying golfing for Weber.

“I absolutely love the team,” Wescott said. “The girls on the team are awesome. I’ve really enjoyed being with the team.”

Being a very talented golfer, Wescott is trying to extend her influence on the team beyond pure scoring.

“I‘ve been able to bring the team up as far as scoring, but mentally I try to not let the girls get too down on themselves,” she said. “It’s not about being the best for me; I just want the team to do well, and hopefully we can do that here.”

The ‘Hawks have been doing pretty well so far, and as they continue to improve, Westcott said she will continue to focus on making the whole team smarter, better golfers.
