Celebrating the holidays from a Jewish perspective

Hanukkah occurs every year and this Jewish holiday uses the lunar calendar so it doesn’t occur on the same day every year. When Hanukkah occurs during school, I would decorate my door with a Hanukkah flag since candles are not allowed in the dorms but if I were at home I would light the menorah. the menorah is a candelabra with 8 candles and one candle is lit for each day. the menorah is lit from left to right because that’s how Hebrew is read. Sometimes I would play dreidel with my friends and a dreidel and this game is like a gambling game for kids. In the game there are 4 letters and a pile of money in the center and the people would spin the dreidel to see how much money they will receive. The letters on the dreidel play an important part in the game because letters decide what happens to the money in the center. The first letter on the dreidel means that the player gets nothing , the second letter is a shin it means that they would put a coin in the center, the third letter on the dreidel is a gimmel and that means the player takes all of the coins from the center and the hay means that the player takes half of the coins from the middle. I used to play this game in Sunday school at my temple and during the last few days I played dreidel with my roommate. When I am at home I would make Hanukkah foods which are latkes and sufganiyot. A Latke is a fried potato with onion and it’s fried in oil and the other dish is a jelly donut with powdered sugar on top. Sometimes I would make the latkes with my grandma but I never made the donuts before.

Also I celebrate Christmas because my stepmom is Christian. During Christmas we would go over to my step mom’s friends’ house for a celebration where we would have brunch and open gifts with her family. After the party we would open gifts at my dad and step mom’s house.
