Daniels to bring laughs to Down Under

Tired from a dull day of classes, boring lectures, and roommates that could just drive a person up a wall? Come down to the University Center’s Down Under for a night of comedic relief with Chad Daniels at 8 p.m. on Thursday.

Chad Daniels has been performing stand-up comedy for 13 years. He has appeared on Comedy Central and the Tonight Show with Conan O’Brien. Photo submitted

“We’ve actually had Chad on campus three years ago and had a great overall turnout,” SEAL intern Jacqueline Olson said.

Daniels, 36, has been involved in stand-up comedy for 13 years. He appeared on Comedy Central and was one of the few people to be on the Tonight Show when Conan O’Brien was hosting.

“I had always wanted to be on [O’Brien’s] show,” Daniels said. “So when the worlds combined it was pretty exciting.”

Daniels grew up in northern Minnesota, moved to Los Angeles for a while but ultimately settled back in the Midwest.

This is where his development in becoming a comedian came into focus. He always seemed to be that one guy standing up around the bonfire trying to get people to laugh.

“I always had used humor as a defense mechanism,” Daniels said. “So I thought instead of using this to just not get beat up as a kid, maybe I should get paid for it too.”

Daniels eventually started with open mic for three minutes a week.

“It took a while for it to get moving,” Daniels said.

He began his career just making things up that people would want to hear. This did not always work. His pieces have since become all about his own life experiences.

“I just talk about my life because if I talk about politics, etc. there is always going to be someone that knows more about it in the room,” Daniels said. “But if I talk about my life there is no way anyone can know more about my life than me.”

Daniels travels through the entire United States including some Canadian cities. He is gone 10 to 12 weeks a year but takes the summer off to focus on family.

“I was at Whitewater three years ago and had a lot of fun,” Daniels said.

The comedy show will be taking place at 8 p.m. Thursday in the Down Under.
