Women’s tennis duo compete at ITA National Championship

Coming off of one of the best seasons in UW-Whitewater women’s tennis history, senior Kalla Schaefer and sophomore Alexandria Bayliss added to the resume.

After Schaefer won the singles draw and her and Bayliss winning the doubles draw at the ITA Midwest Regional on Sept. 25, the two earned a trip to the ITA Small College National Championship, which was held this weekend in Mobile, Ala.

Out of eight singles players, Schaeffer lost her first two matches, but then won her last match, giving her a seventh place finish.

Although she lost two games, Schaefer was still happy that she made it to her second trip to the championships after going her freshman year.

“I am super happy that I got back there again,” Schaefer said. “It’s really nice to do it twice, once my freshman year and again now.”

Schaefer who finished the season 17-3, suffered two losses against some of the highest competition in the game.

“It’s really nice to get that competition because these are schools that normally don’t get to play during the season that often because they are from all over the country,” Schaefer said. “Overall it was a good experience; there were a couple close matches that were a little disappointing, but in the very end I got one win so that was good.”

Schaefer said this time around was better because she got to travel to Alabama along with Bayliss, her doubles partner.

They lost their first two matches of the weekend, giving them an eighth place finish.

“What made it better was that I got to go with my doubles partner Alexandria; that made it really cool to be able to play with her,” Schaefer said. “We had a really close doubles match that we were up in, but that was a close one, it happens sometimes.

The fall season is now concluded and Schaefer still plans to work hard in the off-season to get ready for the spring.

“I will probably take a week or two off and then will start playing again,” Schaefer said. “We usually have captain’s practices like we always do. I also want to get into some tournaments and I want to try to get in some matches so I’m ready again in the spring.”
