Club frisbee competes in St. Louis tournament

The Club Frisbee team played in its first competition of the season in the two-day Midwest Throwdown in St. Louis over the weekend.

The team finished sixth in the tournament after posting a 3-1 record and  advancing to the championship bracket. The ’Hawks were defeated by the Iowa, which won the tournament, in the first round.

The ultimate team won two games against UW-Stevens Point and also defeated North Park.

Senior Vice President Jamey Carey said the team met its expectations.

“We played well and beat the teams that we were supposed to beat,”  Carey said. “We finished just where we expected.”

Finishing in the top half of a 20-team tournament is a testament to the team’s hard work throughout the winter season, Carey said.

To prepare themselves, the team had been practicing weekly in the Williams Center and had their yearly inter squad match. Captain Michael Swain describes being a smaller athletic organization on campus like being part of a family.

“We’re fun,” Swain said. “Once you are a part of the team, it becomes more than a team.  We’re a family that goes out and  competes.”

With this attitude in mind, the group entered the tournament looking to advance through pool play by being one of the top two teams with the best record.
While this is the just the first outdoor competition, the team is looking to build on this and improve for the rest of the spring season.

“We are above where we thought we would finish because this is the first time we have gotten outside this season,” Carey said. “I think we are up to the task to get where we need to be by regionals and sectionals.”

The next step is another tournament in Chicago at the end of the month.

The team’s focus will then shift towards competing in regionals and sectionals, and eventually trying to quallify for nationals, which would be a first in school history.
