“Fiddler on the Roof” comes to Young Auditorium

Siegel
Nedelman

The musical’s plot revolves around the Jewish milkman Tevye, who lives in Tsarist Russia during the early 1900s.

The story capitalizes on the struggles of Tevye as he desperately tries to keep his three daughters set on the ways of Judaism.

Tevye’s attempts become difficult when his daughters begin to marry outside of their faith.

Aside from these issues, the family must also deal with a religious revolution occurring in Russia.

The story, in all of its simplicity, has become a beloved classic throughout the world.  The production has had more than 50 years of success.

Melanie Siegel, who currently tours in the production as both Tevye’s youngest daughter, Bielke, and Grandma Tzeitel, said she feels the production’s poise has lead to such success.

“This production has such a balance between drama and comedy,” Siegel said. “There is just something in the way the music was written and the way that the choreography is performed.”

The current touring production uses the original choreography from when the musical first hit Broadway in 1964.

Lauren Nedelman, currently playing the eldest daughter Tzeitel, said she believes the story remains relevant in current society because the production is based on the theme of change.

“It’s about change, and our society is constantly changing,” Nedelman said. “People going into college are at different places in their lives, and seeing this musical helps its viewers accept change.”

Tickets for the general public range from $25.50-45.50. Tickets can be purchased at the Greenhill Center of the Arts box office, University Center Information Services, or on the Young Auditorium website.
