The No. 1-ranked men’s wheelchair basketball team finished the regular season with a 21-1 record.
They will now travel to the University of Texas–Arlington to compete in the NIWBT championships March 10-12.
The team was clearly built for success during the season with multiple players who represent national teams.
Nate Hinze, senior from Cedar Grove, Wis., and Matt Lesperance, senior from Coleman, Wis., both represented team USA at the World Championships.
Three other players came from other countries as well, Andre Bienek (Germany), Allon Dor-Onn (Israel), and Joe Hargrow (Ireland).
They were all a constant force on the court and definitely a key storyline for the team during the regular season.
“All those guys combined have given us a great effort including the guys coming off the bench,” head coach Jeremy Lade said. “I just think we have a great team.”
The team’s bench has supplemented the starters coming in and playing key roles throughout the season with the mix of excellent national players and key bench players.
The team finished 5-1 against the University of Illinois, dropping its only game of the season to the Fighting Illini in Tuscaloosa, Ala., Feb. 5. The Fighting Illini won last year’s national championship.
The ’Hawks are the No. 1 overall seed going into the championship tournament.
“The tough part about basketball is it’s one-and-done, so any team can beat you and you’re out,” Lade said.
