The UW-Whitewater Women’s Tennis team continues to serve up a hot streak with their 9-0 finish over the UW-Oshkosh Titans Sept. 25. The Warhawks have gone undefeated this season and have garnered wins over UW-Eau Claire (8-1) and UW-La Crosse (8-1).
The last time these two teams met, the ’Hawks left the Titans scoreless in the WIAC tournament. The Titans entered the match and wound up empty-handed as the Hawks performed another clean sweep, winning each of the matches on the night.
Seniors Abby Day and Hillary Franzen stood out in their doubles match, and doubles partners, seniors Alexandra Bayliss and Jackie Vitale, also pulled off an impressive victory.
Coach Frank Barnes decided to sit some competitors that are usually seen in singles matches and moved up sophomore Erika Williams and senior Amy Upthagrove in singles matches. The ladies proved they were up to the challenge.
Many athletic teams at UW-W look forward to playing UW-Oshkosh due to the strong WIAC rivalry between the two schools. The team expected to have a rough time in at least one singles and one doubles match, but those matches proved triumphant for the ’Hawks with a 6-2 win in the singles match and a 8-0 win in the doubles.
“It’s a conference match, it’s always tough,” Barnes said. “Oshkosh is always particularly good in at least one doubles and one singles match.”
