After the Warhawks baseball team took the first game of the doubleheader Thursday by using a three-run seventh inning to win game one, 7-4, the ’Hawks didn’t get to UW-Stevens Point starter Cam Seidl until the eighth inning of game two of the double header and won in 13 innings, 5-4, on a RBI single from junior infielder Adam Gregory.
“It feels good, I’m just glad we came away with the win,” freshman Steve Chamberlain said. “Hard fought game and at the end of the day we took two wins away from a really good team. Happy that we could do it.”
The Pointers got an early run off of Warhawks’ starting pitcher Curtis Morgan on a home run by Jimmy Coady. Morgan and Seidl were in a pitching duel until the Pointers scored three in the fifth inning.
Seidl continued to keep the ’Hawks’ bats quiet for seven innings while Morgan kept the Warhawks in it with a stellar performance as well. Both pitchers went at least seven innings as Morgan went 7.2 innings and Seidl went eight innings.
In the eighth inning, Warhawk senior third baseman Jared Fon led off with a walk and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Senior centerfielder Dylan Friend then put the ’Hawks on the board for the first time in the game with a two-run home run to cut the Pointers’ lead in half.
Senior right fielder Michael Gonzalez doubled and later scored on a Trey Cannon single to cut the deficit down to one at 4-3.
Fon led off the Warhawks’ half of the ninth with a walk and later stole second base. He then advanced to third on a fielder’s choice and on the same play, scored on a Pointers’ error to tie the game.
After freshman Austin Jones and junior Colin Grove kept it tied until the 13th inning, Chamberlain led off with a pinch-hit triple to right field for his first hit of the season.
“It was huge,” Chamberlain said. “I was 0-for-3 up until this point, so it was nice especially in that situation to get a hit.”
Two batters later, Gregory drove in the winning run on a RBI single.
“It feels good especially after losing to these guys in the nineteen-inning game last year,” Gregory said. “I got to give it to our pitching staff with Jones coming in and throwing strikes and keeping us in it. Defense made some plays and I just got put in the moment.”
With the two wins in the double header on Thursday, the Warhawks improve to 20-3 on the season.
