Kayla Martin broke the 1000 yard freestyle Feb 7th for the Warhawk women’s swim/dive team and she now hold three all time records. Martin is gearing up for the conference championship and she is excited about her and her teammates chances in nationals. But like many students, she has her own opinion on many topics and spends more time in the pool than her homework.
RP: Saturday Feburary 7th was the first time the Warhawks women’s swim/dive team beat UW-E Claire, how did that feel?
KM: Oh My God, we were so excited and it was the best feeling in the world. Once we won the 200 free we were thinking that this could happen it was so crazy.
RP: You broke another school record at your last meet of the season I just want to know how you feel about it?
KM: I wasn’t expecting to break the record I was trying to break the pool record. This girl from Stevens point got the pool record when they swam here and I said you know what I’m just going go for it it’s the last home meet lets throw on a suit and it was another mind blowing thing.
RP: Is swimming your favorite sport to play and or watch?
KM: I’m very uncoordinated so, I like to do other things but I suck at them. I tried playing basketball over the summer with some friends but I broke my finger, no cordination, very clumsy it’s a problem I have. But I like to watch sports. We went and watched the wheel cheer basketball game and that was so cool. I love the brewers and I go to at least 3 or 4 games a year.
RP: Who is your favorite player on the brewers? and do you think they will make the playoffs this year?
KM: Ryan Braun. I’m hoping they do well but probably not. Maybe with a stretch of luck, I mean we beat La Crosse out of nowhere so I mean it could happen. Crazier things have happen.
RP: What is your favorite thing to do on your free time?
KM: Free time? I don’t know I don’t have that much free time, I swim a lot.
RP: Who got you into swimming, why do you love swimming, why are you on the swimming team?
KM: I started out trying diving, my dad was an All American all four years college diving at Madison, Milwaukee. So I started out there and I was awful I smacked way too many times and it hurt so bad I just couldn’t do it. So then I did swim lessons for a while and I always love just gong to play. When I switched schools in 5th grade and went to West Allis a flyer came come in the mail to be on New Berlin swim team. I went and tried out and the rest is history.
