Photo contest returns to campus

The annual spring photo contest expanded its boundaries this year, allowing for faculty and community members to compete along with students. Nearly 230 photographs were submitted for this year’s contest.

Each amateur photographer was allowed to send in four photographs. There were 11 categories, including animals, black and white, digitally enhanced, events, flowers, international travel, macro, nature, objects, panoramic and people shots.

The photos will be put on display in the Fiskum Gallery in the University Center, and will be judged during a reception at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 30 in the gallery. Judges will present 19 awards, including first through third place winners, two or three honorable mentions, best photographs from each category, and best of show picture.

The judging panel consists of six highly experienced, knowledgeable photographers, including UC Graphics Coordinator Katherine Shanahan and photography instructor Andrea Ferrella.

The judges will examine each photograph closely for the subject matter of the picture, creativity, lighting, special effects and overall impact.

The photo contest began nearly 10 years ago, and began as a simple suggestion.

“The idea all started with a suggestion from a gallery assistant,” said Kim Adams, assistant director for the University Center. “We noticed other universities were doing their own photo contests so we decided to give the contest a trial run.”

The best of show photograph is based on popular vote, so students are urged to check out the gallery and place a vote.

“Photography is a common interest. This contest is a great opportunity for students to check out the talents of these creative amateur photographers,” junior Lindsey Kessler said.
