The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women’s golf team wrapped up its final competition of the year Saturday with a second-place finish at Delbrook Golf Club.
“We got second place behind a D-II school,” senior Kate Winkler said. “I’m very happy with how we finished out this season.”
Senior Sammie Leibham finished second out of 70 players, breaking two school records. Leibham shot a 73 on Friday breaking the 18-hole school record and then shot a 79 Saturday for a 36-hole tally of 152 to beat the two-round school record.
“Sammie shooting a single round school record was a great feat for her,” head coach Brett Weber said. “Best weekend of ball striking in her career as a Warhawk.”
Winkler and sophomore Kayla Asleson tied for 12th with identical scores of 167. Winkler carded an 83 on Friday and an 84 Saturday in her final round as a Warhawk, and Asleson improved her first-round score by one stroke with an 83.
“I’m happy with how I played this weekend,” Winkler said. “I tied my collegiate best again with an 83 on the first day and then stayed consistent with an 84 the following day.”
Sophomore Stephanie Stair placed 26th with a 178 (87-91) and senior Sarah Bregant shot a 185 (88-97) to finish tied for 36th.
“My performance this past weekend was not where it needed to be,” Stair said. “I was initially extremely upset with my overall two-day score, but I know I have a lot of time to work on my game over the summer.”
The UW-Whitewater Spring Fling was filled with emotions honoring the seniors, ALS and a moment of silence for those serving.
“We dedicated this tournament to ALS awareness as my grandpa passed away from it one month ago,” Stair said. “Taking second place as a team put a smile on my face because I knew my grandpa would be proud.”
The UW-Whitewater Spring Fling concluded varsity competition for the year, but the Warhawks junior varsity team will compete next April 25 and April 26 at the Augustana Invitational at Highland Springs Golf Course in Rock Island, Illinois.
“This season was really special for me,” Winkler said. “Being the captain for this amazing group of girls was extremely rewarding, and the memories that we made every weekend is what I’ll never forget.”
