Local family hopeful to receive new home

The UW-Whitewater chapter of Habitat for Humanity was selected to receive a $5,000 grant from State Farm Insurance, beating out 75 other chapters nationwide.

To receive the grant, Habitat for Humanity must fundraise and collect $5,000, which State Farm Insurance will then match for a total of $10,000. The money must be raised by May 13.

“We have for sure just over $2,000,” Habitat for Humanity President Chad Mork said.

The grant will be used to build a house in Elkhorn for a single mother and her two sons.  She has been waiting almost three years to receive a house from Habitat for Humanity.

“We are hoping to break ground on Easter Sunday and to have the house finished before Christmas so the family can have their own home on Christmas,” Mork said.

The family, along with any other organization that is interested, will help the volunteers build the house.

Habitat for Humanity will be holding various fundraisers, such as a Hire a Habitator event, to reach their goal.

“Members of the community hire Habitat workers to help with odd jobs, from raking leaves to helping move furniture, and from spring cleaning to washing windows,” Mork said.  “What they do is write a check to donate that money to our organization.”

Mork said he is confident they won’t have any problem raising the money.

Checks can be written to the Campus Ministry Center at 344 Prairie St.

A reception to recognize Habitat for Humanity received the grant will take place 11 a.m. to noon on April 13 in the UC Ballroom.

“We are very grateful for the opportunity with State Farm and we find this gift a fantastic opportunity … to impact someone’s life,” Mork said.
