The UW-Whitewater women’s golf team placed fourth out of 10 over the weekend at the Stevens Point Mad Dawg Invite.
The team had 711 (363-348) strokes. The ’Hawks were 16 strokes away from third place.
“I think we’re all disappointed in how most of us played,” head coach Brett Weber said. “We left a lot of shots out there. I’m not sure if we were good enough to win, but we just got off to a really bad start.”
Freshman Rebekah Donner tied for ninth place out of 52 with a two-day total of 172 (90, 82). She led the ’Hawks at the invite.
“Rebekah played really solid,” Weber said. She hit it really good. She kinda struggled on the greens yesterday and kinda struggled on the greens today, but she still shot an 82.”
Junior Stephanie Stair tied for 16th place. She finished with a two-day total of 177 (89, 88).
“I definitely struggled this weekend,” Stair said. “Overall, my scores didn’t end up too bad, but they weren’t where they needed to be, or need to be for this weekend.”
Sophomore Jess Gruber took 21st place overall. She finished with a total of 180 (89, 91).
“The weather was a lot colder than what we’ve been used to as of recently, so I think that took some adjusting,” Stair said. “Most of my teammates improved on the second day which was good to see, but we all need to step it up for this upcoming weekend.”
Freshman Kaitlin Bowe tied for 12th place with a two-day total of 174 (90, 84).
“I didn’t get to see her [Bowe] play much,” Weber said. “Her score card was pretty clean except for a couple holes. I’m really excited about Kaitlin and her potential. She’s swinging really well right now and I’m really happy for her.”
Next weekend the ’Hawks will compete in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championship in Nekoosa, Wisconsin.
“Our biggest competition is Oshkosh,” Stair said. “This hits home for me, because my twin sister actually plays golf for that team. They are very solid this year and it’s possible we could beat them, but it’s going to be very hard.”
