Team captain, senior and first-team All-conference selection, Jenna Woodson, recorded her 29th career assist, breaking the previous school record held by Becky Cera.
Woodson set the school record for career assists in the 4-2 win over UW-River Falls in the second conference game of the season for the ’Hawks.
It didn’t take long for Woodson to break the record. Just 45 seconds into the match, Woodson found Carly Pottle, who put the ball into the back of the net to give the Warhawks the 1-0 advantage.
“I’m usually not a person who thinks about individual accolades, but after figuring out I was four assists away from tying it after my junior year it was the back of my mind,” Woodson said. “It’s funny because it took me a second to realize I tied it during the Loras game when Carly scored, because I didn’t remember I was the one who passed her the ball.”
Eleven minutes later in the match Pottle added her second goal of the match, this time scoring on a pass from Brianna Reid. All of the eight goals Pottle scored this season have come in pairs. She scored twice against MSOE, Wittenberg, Loras and River Falls.
Reid had a chance in the 28th minute to open up the game by a three-goal margin, but her shot hit the post.
River Falls responded by attacking and in the 29th minute the Falcons cut the lead in half as forward Lizzy Bruder scored one for River Falls.
Reid broke through with her team-leading 12th goal of the season in the 51st minute, scoring on a pass from Marie Lesperance that put the Warhawks up by a count of 3-1.
“Having multiple playmakers in our attack is one of our greatest strengths as it makes it very difficult for teams to key in on one or two players,” coach Ryan Quamme said.
The Warhawks weren’t finished yet, Payton DeLuga, a freshman defender, made it 4-1 when she scored her first collegiate goal in the 54th minute of play. Adria Schueler made the pass and recorded the assist on the goal.
River Falls final shot of the match resulted in a goal in the 89th minute, and the game ended with the score of 4-2.
Earlier in the week, the Warhawks squared off against Loras College in Dubuque, Iowa. Thanks to a two-goal effort from Pottle Whitewater was able to escape with a 3-2 double-overtime win.
Katie Truesdale put the Duhawks on the board in the 11th minute for a 1-0 lead. But less than a minute later, the ’Hawks answered. Pottle received a pass from Woodson and tied the game up.
Loras applied pressure on the Warhawks defense and the goalkeeper for the ’Hawks, Erin Doody, and forced her to make four saves in the first half. But the Warhawks did relinquish one more goal to Truesdale in the 29th minute. The Duhawks carried their 2-1 lead into halftime.
The second half was very physical. There were 19 fouls and five yellow cards in the second half alone.
“Loras is an extremely difficult place to play,” Quamme said. “They are a talented team and the game had a postseason feel to it for both teams. The game did get physical especially after halftime and I’m proud of our players for not backing down to the physical play.”
Mackenzie Serbousek tied the game in the 79th minute with an unassisted goal.
The first overtime was just as physical as the second half and was foul laden as well. No team was able to capitalize on any opportunities to score.
Finally, in the 107th minute, Loras was whistled for a foul that resulted in a penalty kick for the Warhawks. Pottle stepped up and struck it past the keeper.
The Warhawks are set to play again at 4:30 p.m. on Oct. 10 at home against UW-Eau Claire on Fiskum Field.
