The Andersen Library is gearing up to deliver a video game-themed event to campus aimed to help students relax before the end of the semester’s workload picks up.

Nov. 21 is International Games Day, on that day, the Andersen Library is hosting tournaments as well as setting up a variety of board games for UW-Whitewater students to participate.

“It’s a lot of fun,” President of League of Legends Club Katherine Stull said. “League of Legends Club will be present and participating as well.”

The winner of the Smash Bros tournament will receive a one-year subscription to One Play, a service that functions like iTunes for video games, as a prize. Game Zombie will be there as well.

They are a journalistic program that creates works solely around gaming. Some of their writing as well as videos will be shown at the event.

Another student organization called Gamed practices game design and is heavily tied to the game design curriculum on campus also known as MAGD.

“We just want to celebrate gaming and the fantastic infl uence it can have on society and culture,” said Amanda Howell, the library staff member coordinating the event.

The library staff wants to promote students playing video games after a hard day at college to help with relaxation.

“We want to promote stress relief,” Howell said. “We host the Relaxathon and a lot of different activities.”

To go along with those events, the library has the game room to support those video game student organizations and students looking to just sit back and play.

Video games and consoles are free to rent from the library.

“More students should try picking up video games as a way to cool down,” Stull said.

The library staff is also interested in hosting Pathfinder campaigns as well as Dungeons and Dragons campaigns.

The event starts at 12:30 p.m. Nov. 21 in the Andersen Li brary.

“Everyone is invited to participate,” Howell said. “We’d really love to see people come from all around campus to hang out and play some video games.”

Interested gamers can sign up at the contest sign located across from the circulation desk.
