Although there isn’t any snow on the ground, winter is definitely here. In less than two weeks, everyone will be on winter break. It will be fun at first; no papers, no assignments, no deadlines to meet, but then, boredom sinks in. After a few days of being free from classes and school responsibilities, you’ll find yourself scrolling through social media for hours on end.
Fear not! Here is a list of boredom crushers you can try this winter to keep yourself from checking the fridge every 30 minutes.
Let’s start indoors. Netflix and Chill is the obvious option. Cuddle up with bae and check out some of the top new releases: “The Martian,” “Hitman: Agent 47,” “Creed,” “Krampus,” “The Peanuts Movie,” and “Chi-Raq.” Don’t have a bae? That’s cool, too. Throw some cookies in the oven (chocolate cookies with mint chocolate chips are the best), swirl a candy cane in a cup of hot chocolate, and get cozy with a bae-substitute body pillow while catching up on shows.
If watching “A Christmas Story” five times in a row isn’t your thing, there’s a bunch of stuff you could do instead. Go shopping online. Sometimes Holiday deals are better online than in stores. Spend a day at the spa. Go work out. Summer bodies are built in the winter. Make a list of New Year’s resolutions you probably won’t follow. Decorate a gingerbread house. Learn a card trick. Create some holiday drink recipes (hot buttered rum is awesome). Grow a beard. The possibilities are endless.
When you’re beyond tired of being inside, hit the slopes and go snowboarding, skiing, tubing, sledding or snowmobiling. Take it a bit slower and go ice skating. Build an igloo, ice fish, or have a snowman building contest with friends that will inevitably turn into a snowball fight.
If you’re willing to go the distance, visit Milwaukee for some awesome events. Tour Pabst Mansion, www.pabstmansion.com, and learn the history about the Blue Ribbon brew. Milwaukee offers carriage rides around town. Warm up at Milwaukee’s Chili Bowl contest, www.mkechilibowl.com. Each ticket comes with admission to the event and eight three-ounce samples of chili. Visit Splash Studios in Milwaukee for a night of painting and wine with friends. Also, Lake Geneva hosts the National Snow Sculpting Competition every year.
For people who like making money or volunteering, donate plasma for a little extra cash or for good karma. There are plasma and blood donation centers in Janesville, Fort Atkinson, Milton and Beloit. If needles aren’t your thing, shovel or plow away the snow for your neighbors or elderly for a few bucks. Another option is to find a soup kitchen, homeless shelter or food pantry. Toys for Tots also accepts donations during the holiday season for families who can’t afford gifts for their kids. Try your luck at a casino and donate some of your winnings, or you could get a job. That works, too. Any option guarantees good vibes.
No matter what you decide to do, stay safe and stay warm. See you when you get back.
