With only one non-conference match left before WIAC play begins, the Warhawk men’s soccer team will try to remain undefeated as they travel to Carroll University on Sunday.
Carroll (0-2-1) is off to a slow start to begin the season, but head coach Greg Henschel doesn’t expect that to be much of a factor.
“I expect our guys to be focused,” Henschel said. “Carroll is a good team, they play hard and I don’t expect our guys to look into their record too much.”
The ’Hawks (4-0-1) were in action this past week and picked up two key victories against Loras College (3-3) and Wartburg College (2-2).
The ’Hawks matched up against Loras Sept. 8 in Dubuque, Iowa. The Duhawks, the No. 16 ranked team in Division III by the NSCAA, jumped out to an early 1-0 lead before the ’Hawks evened the score in the 32nd minute.
The teams remained deadlocked at 1-1 as the game went into double overtime. Each team needed someone to step up and deliver. The player who stepped up for the ’Hawks was Dan Montanye.
With three seconds remaining in the game, the senior mid-fielder took a pass from sophomore forward Bemis Gorvego and knocked it in, giving the ’Hawks a dramatic 2-1 victory.
Montanye, a first-team All-WIAC performer last year, had been slowed early in the season by an injury. He was ecstatic about scoring the game-winning goal.
“I was glad to get back onto the pitch and with Loras being such a formidable opponent, it felt fantastic to be able to come away with the game winning goal in such a dramatic fashion,” Montanye said.
The ’Hawks picked up a 1-0 victory Sunday on the road against Wartburg College in a very physical game. Wartburg picked up 19 fouls during the game compared to the ’Hawks’ three.
Junior mid-fielder Trevor Swentik scored his second goal of the season in the 20th minute off an assist from senior defenseman Steve Nashleanas, sparking the ’Hawks victory.
Five games into the season, Montanye said he likes where the team is at but feels they can still improve in areas.
“The team has been doing many of the little things well and that helps us put the pieces together to create the big picture that we want,” Montanye said. “Communication between players on the field has always been an issue for us since I’ve been here, but I think that is something we are working on and can hopefully fix when it comes to the later parts of the season.”
