A&R Review: “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow”
October 21, 2019
“The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” put on by GreatWorks Theatre in Young Auditorium on October 13 was an absolutely adorable, funny and family-friendly adaptation of the gothic story of the same name by Washington Irving.
The play, for the most part, followed the classic story of “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” in a way audiences of all ages could enjoy, with some fun changes such as adding in some family-friendly humor (as well as jokes parents could enjoy), audience interaction and cute, humorous props.
The GreatWorks Theatre group was comprised of three members who played the various characters throughout the show. One member played Ichabod Crane – affectionately referred to as “Icky” – throughout the duration of the show, and the other two members picked up the other characters such as Katrina and Bram.
The audience interaction was probably one of the most delightful parts of the show, the most notable of which being a schoolhouse setting. The group brought three members of the audience on stage for a spelling bee, two children and one adult, and had each spell out a word. It was a very cute and humorous moment watching the children spell out the words and the cast reactions to it.
The group did a great job switching between characters in quick and humorous ways. The most impressive moment was watching one cast member get into the large and overbearing headless horseman costume.
The show was very well done and an enjoyable experience for audiences of all ages.
