City councilman facing two felony charges

According to the Wisconsin Circuit System, the trial against a Whitewater alderman has yet to be concluded.

District 2 Councilman Javonni M. Butler, 22, is facing two felony charges after allegedly selling marijuana to a confidential informant in May.

Butler plead not guilty to the charges in June and waived his right to a preliminary hearing.

According to the criminal complaint, Walworth County sheriff’s deputies said Butler sold to an informant wearing a wire on March 16 and 28 from his apartment in Whitewater.

Butler, the only UW-Whitewater student serving on the city council, was arrested in May and charged with two counts of delivering THC, less than 200 grams.

Members of the sheriff’s department drug unit said in the criminal complaint the informant returned from Butler’s apartment with marijuana both times.

A maximum fine of $10,000 and up to three years and six months in prison accompanies each count.

In an interview with WISN Channel 12 news in May, Whitewater Common Council president Patrick Singer said, “Obviously we were taken by surprise, concerned about the charge. But obviously there is a presumption of innocence until this court process plays itself out.”

Butler, a political science major, declined to comment on the issue and whether or not he would be returning to UW-Whitewater for classes this fall.

After running as a registered write-in last spring, Butler was elected to represent District 2, which includes the UW-Whitewater campus.

Butler served on the council prior to his election after being appointed in 2010 when former District 2 alderman Max Taylor resigned.
