If you looked at senior running back Levell Coppage’s numbers through his first three years, you would have said ‘what an amazing career’.
The thing is, he isn’t finished.
By the time his career is over, Coppage will be arguably one of the best players in Division III history.
Through his first three years, Coppage already ranks first in many categories in not only team history, but the WIAC as well.
Even with a pretty new offensive line, head coach Lance Leipold believes that shouldn’t affect the run game.
“I’m very confident, our offensive coaches have done an outstanding job this year and have put a unit that has been able to lead this league in rushing year in and year out,” Leipold said. “I think he’ll put together another unit that has an excellent group as they continue to work together.
Currently, Coppage has rushed for 5,902 yards, which is second behind Justin Beaver (6,584). Coppage’s career yards ranks seventh in Division III history and if he rushes for 2,172 more yards this season, Coppage will be the all-time leading rusher in Division III history. University of Mount Union’s Nate Kmik holds the record with 8,074 yards.
Leipold believes that Coppage has the chance to hit that mark, because he has that potential.
“We sure hope so,” Leipold said. “He has worked extremely hard and has all the build to continue to put up those type of numbers. I think the issue of course will be when that line comes together and the balance that we have within our offense.”
Coppage also holds the team and WIAC record in touchdowns with 84, a mere 40 more than second-place (Beaver, 44).
Not only does Coppage provide exceptional statistics, but he helps with what matters most. He has assisted UW-Whitewater to three straight Amos
Alonzo Stagg Bowl appearances, winning two of them. He set the record for rushing yards in the championship game last season with 299 yards, and was named Most Valuable Player.
Holding a 45-2 record as a Warhawk, Coppage has been an All-American every year and was named player of the year in Division III last season.
“It’s been special to be a part of,” quarterback Matt Blanchard said. “He shows up on Saturdays and flat out performs. His overall career has been something special.”
