Swim teams dominate Oshkosh

UW-Whitewater men’s and women’s swim and dive teams had their first home swim matches of the season against UW-Oshkosh Saturday, Nov. 5. UW-Whitewater men’s swim team came into the day with a record of 0-1. Meanwhile, UW-Whitewater women’s swim team came into the day with a record of 1-0.
The Whitewater men’s swim team beat Oshkosh by a score of 186-78. Matt Ozog, Donny Gramer, Ethan Coons, and Ethan Bergman combined to win the 200 yard medley with a time of 1:40.04. Hunter Hayberger won the 1,000 yard freestyle. His time to win was 10:27:07. Hayberger also won the 500 yard freestyle, clocking in at 5:00.9. Meanwhile, Dom Schleuter won the 200 yard freestyle with a time of 1:47.05. His 48.73 time was good to win the 100 yard freestyle. He topped in the 200 yard medley with a time of 2:09.38.
Bergman added to that. His time on the 100 yard freestyle was 54.01, which was the best time in the 100 yard by a second. In the 50 yard freestyle, his time was 22.42. In the 200 yard freestyle, Coons won with a time of 2:07.02. Daniel Keller won the 200 yard freestyle, finishing in 2.18.38. Bergman, Gramer, Coons, and Schlueter won it by combining for a time of 1:30.85.
“I think we performed really well. We had our highest practice of the season, also our toughest week,” Ozog said. “I think we have got to recover. I think we have a good game plan and we’re excited to go against La Crosse next week.”
On the women’s side, the Warhawks beat Oshkosh 167-87. Gianna Gnewuch, Gabby Sponseller, Naomi Hamerla, and Zaria Terry won the 200 yard medley with a time of 1:54.07. In the 100 yard backstroke, Gnewuch won with a time of 1:02.64. Terry took first place in the 50 yard freestyle, clocking in at 24.90. In the 100 yard freestyle, she was just .13 behind first with a time of 54.43.
The 200 yard freestyle was won by Brianna Zimdars at 2:25.84. Hamerla’s 1:04.36 time was good enough to win the 100 freestyle. For the 200 yard freestyle, Terry, Maren McDonnell, Ciara Hynes, and Morgan Nabors won it by working for a time of 1:44.32.
“The team did really well. We have been training really hard these last two weeks and we had a couple personal bests and a lot of season bests, so they did really well. We were proud of them today,” assistant coach Abby Thompson said. “We’re just going to keep training and hopefully the times just keep getting better.”
Both the men’s and women’s next meet is next Saturday, Nov. 12 at UW-La Crosse. Their next home swim meet is Saturday, Jan. 28, against UW-Eau Claire.
