The nationally recognized Wisconsin Brass Quintet will make a stop in Whitewater for a performance at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 26 in the Young Auditorium.

The quintet was formed in 1972 at the University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Music.

Members throughout the years have changed but the current roster consists of John Aley, Daniel Grabois, Mark Hetzler, John Stevens, and Douglas Lindsey. They travel and perform around Wisconsin and neighboring states as well.

The quintet also receives airtime on Wisconsin Public Radio.

“Playing for the quintet means playing with a group of great players,” Grabois said.

Grabois, an assistant professor at UW-Madison, has been a part of the quintet for one month as a French horn player. He first got involved in music 37 years ago when he received a French horn from his mother.

Hetzler, associate professor of trombone, is in his eighth year with the quintet. He has played as a soloist and with symphony orchestras all around the world and the U.S.

The quintet also consists of two trumpet players, Lindsey and Aley.

Aley, a trumpet professor at Madison, is a former member of the American Brass Quintet, which performs internationally and around the U.S.

Lindsey is a second year Doctor of Music Arts student under Aley and has been a part of the quintet for two years. He is currently a doctoral candidate at UW-Madison and is hoping to be a teacher.

“I really enjoy the whole process of playing the trumpet and getting better,” Lindsey said.

Stevens, school of music director, is the fifth member of the quintet. Stevens was a tuba soloist for the original Broadway production BARNUM.

He is also a member of the International Tuba Euphonium Association (ITEA) Executive Committee. Recently, he received ITEA’s prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award, the highest honor in his field.

The price of admission for the general public is $19 and $11 for students.
