UW-W recognized as military friendly school for assisting military students

UW-Whitewater was recognized as being a military friendly school again.

In G.I. Jobs magazine’s 2012 rankings, UW-Whitewater was placed in the top 20 percent of colleges and universities in the U.S.

The university embraces this as “getting recognized that programs for students are effective”, Veterans Coordinator Janice Nordin said. UW-Whitewater is a “welcoming place for students and family.”

UW-Whitewater has policies that accommodate military students. The Active Duty policy allows students being deployed to withdraw and not have to reapply for admission for up to two years following deployment.

The Military Leave Policy, a policy passed three years ago, allows military students to have an excused absence if they need extended time for training.

The Wisconsin G.I. Bill waives tuition for veterans who entered service from Wisconsin. Also, the Federal Post 911 G.I. Bill pays tuition and fees for veterans, but does not cover the non-resident tuition.

Since there is no discount for non-resident students, UW-Whitewater has an agreement with the VA’s Yellow Ribbon Program which states, for continuing non-resident students, the Yellow Ribbon Program will cover half of the non-resident portion, and UW-Whitewater will cover the other half.

Senior Brian Butzler got out of the military in November and will be graduating in the spring with a degree in elementary education.

“I’m very happy with the assistance I’ve received from the Veteran’s Office,” Butzler said.  “Janice does a great job and will go out of her way for the veterans. ”

Butzler said between the organizations, the Veteran’s Office and veteran friendly activities, he is very happy with his decision of enrollment at UW-Whitewater.

UW-Whitewater allows students to get credit for courses taken through the military.

Currently, there are 250 students using federal benefits.
