National Deaf History Month is important because it reminds us to look back at the adversities, accomplishments, and strength of the deaf community. Continuing to learn about their rich culture and history, and their struggle to obtain access to everyday experiences that most people take for granted, gives us integral knowledge to become better allies. For example, access to closed captioning and interpreters is a relatively new concept in terms of history, and there is an older generation of deaf people still alive today that grew up with no access to them. Can you imagine going through school or to the doctor and not being able to understand what they are saying to you? The deaf community has come a long way in recent years, but there is still a long way to go, and we ALL must continue the work to do better.
