Indigenous People’s Day is a significant counterpoint to the celebration of Columbus Day. Rather than celebrating a man whose “discovery” heralded the death, persecution and disruption of life for millions of people, members of the Native American Cultural Awareness Association believe that we should all honor Indigenous peoples who have persevered and continue to overcome adversity, protecting the land, water and many cultural traditions of this continent. Some of the best ways to do this can be to learn about the land where we reside, sow native plants, and do your best to educate yourself about Indigenous communities that are still here. There are 11 federally recognized nations in Wisconsin and one seeking to reclaim recognition. If you’re interested in that last part, anyone is welcome to join NACAA and learn with us, Tuesdays 4-5:30 in UC 264 contact [email protected].
