Spotify each year collects data from their listeners to create their ‘wrapped’ statistics. Released on Nov. 30 at midnight, everyone that has an account for Spotify was given their data on their music choice. This is popular among high school and college students, as a way to explore what they listened to this year, and to compare them to their friends and family on their social media. Memes are created, friendships are made, and overall, gives people something to look forward to toward the end of the year.
This year’s design is decorating your screen with bright and neon colors with a, coincidentally, Warhawk black and purple background. The contrast draws the eye to wanting to see their songs. This was a way to keep moving forward, the past years were light backgrounds and dark lettering. This year was more popular than years past because of the popularity increase in Spotify.
The things that the data collects are the accounts top played songs, top artist, and then the playlist that is created with those songs and artists. These are currared by the data taken from the entire year of music. The start date begins at the beginning of the year, and goes until halloween, then the data is shown in a calendar circle to show what they listened to and when. The “wrapped” most common thing posted and seen online is the sheet that has their top 5 songs, then top 5 artists, and then had the amount of minutes that you listened too. The other thing was the genres. The explanation given for the genres is given in the videos that are before your screen.
The most interesting and cool part of the wrap was the “Artist Messages.” These are messages that a certain artist that you listened to will create, and everyone that listened to them a lot, will receive. Some of the top artists seen online have been Taylor Swift, Bad Bunny, Drake, among others. Artists left a 15-30 second “thank you for listening” to everyone who got them as their artist of the year. This was a fun experience due to the fact that these artists are people, and listeners feel more comfortable and like the artists are people too. Overall, the entirety of Spotify Wrapped is to encourage people to use their accounts for music and will be able to see their data later on.
