In a celebration among the Whitewater community and Universities of Wisconsin system, Dr. Corey A. King was officially inaugurated as the 18th Chancellor of the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater Feb. 23, 2024. The inauguration, held at Young Auditorium, brought together faculty, staff, students, alumni, and esteemed guests to witness the beginning of a new era in the university’s history.
With a distinguished career in academics and a passion for student success, Chancellor King steps into his new role with a clear vision for advancing the university’s mission of excellence in education, research and community engagement. In his inaugural address, Chancellor King reestablished his commitment to fostering a diverse, inclusive and innovative learning environment where students can thrive and fulfill their potential.
“We learn, we work and we grow at a university where inclusion and belonging matter,” said King. “Every university member, whether a student, a staff, a faculty or alum, belongs here. We educate students from all journeys of faith and ideas, and we will work together to provide an inclusive education and environment for all our university community.”
With a focus on expanding access to higher education, enhancing student support services, and strengthening partnerships with the local community, Chancellor King aims to position UW-Whitewater as a leader in preparing students for success in a rapidly evolving world.
“With Chancellor King at the helm, this university is positioned to continue to do great things,” said Universities of Wisconsin President Jay Rothman. “He brings integrity, an impressive commitment to students, and a passion for working collaboratively to build a future where UW-Whitewater helps students in our state drive through the university’s strategic plan. I have no doubt that under Chancellor King’s leadership the best is yet to come for UW-Whitewater.”
King’s inauguration not only marks a historic moment for the campus community, but for the city of Whitewater as well.
“This symbolizes a change in leadership,” said City Manager John Weidl, “but also the strengthening of our community’s commitment to creating a brighter and more diverse partnership.”
Other speakers included Whitewater Student Government President Angelina Izzo, Faculty Senate Chair Kimberely Nath, Academic Staff Assembly Chair Rebecca Jones, University Staff Council Chair Wesley Enterline, former UW-Whitewater chancellor Richard Telfer and former colleague and friend of King’s, E. LaBrent Chrite, the keynote speaker.
“Under his leadership, we are not just striving to be the best we can be,” said Izzo. “We are redefining what it means to achieve excellence together.”
In his inaugural speech, King thanked members of the campus community for their continuous dedication to being “Warhawk nice,” “Warhawk assertive,” and “Warhawk bold.” He similarly thanked alumni for being “Warhawk bold” for their continuous support of the campus.
“For you see, I am Corey King,” concluded King. “I am a Black male, and my pronouns are he/him. I am Warhawk bold.”
With the support of the university community and his dedication to the university’s mission, Chancellor King is poised to lead UW-Whitewater to new heights of achievement in the years to come.
