“Whitewater is the best school I’ve done yet,” exclaimed Kelly Kellz during her Thursday, Sept. 6, comedian show. Kellz, a teacher turned comedian from Milwaukee, joined numerous excited Warhawks in the UC Summers Auditorium.
“Laugh with all your teeth, open up your mouth,” Kellz brought electric energy to the Summers Auditorium. Kellz found the perfect balance between light-hearted humor and heart-felt life stories. She spoke about an array of topics from college to teaching and even Planet Fitness. Empowering the Warhawks in the audience to follow their heart was a common theme in her performance.
Sometimes you find your passion by accident, which was the case for Kellz. A long while ago Kellz and her husband found themselves at a comedy show, where Kellz’s husband dared her to do stand-up for the first time. To Kellz’s surprise, her five-minute walk-on comedy turned into an eight-minute show that ended with her first standing ovation. As Kellz said, “You never know who is watching,” that night an agent was in the crowd and the rest of her comedian career is history.
“College is the dopest foundation you’re gonna lay,” Kellz told the audience between her comical wonder women references. Kellz was a first-year experience student at Central State University.
Kellz was not alone in this performance; her mom joined the Warhawks in the crowd with just as much enthusiasm. Towards the end of her performance, she brought humanity to her show, thanking Whitewater for bringing her joy and warming her heart as she hugged her mother on stage.
To say this performance was a great UC opener show would be an understatement, Kellz brought laughter, a sense of belonging, hope, and most important a ray of sunshine to Whitewater.
Soon after the show had concluded Kellz pulled the Royal Purple aside and provided this heartfelt statement, “Whitewater was a complete vibe. The students were engaged, the energy was top tier and the hospitality made me want to come back for more. I would rank Whitewater in my top three schools I’ve ever been to in my entire career.”
