Kosova, one of Europe’s youngest and smallest countries has a lot to offer; from its energetic nightlife to long hikes across mountains and valleys, and ancient roman ruins followed by Ottoman squares, there is a lot to unravel in this small country located in southeastern Europe.
For many summers I went to my parents’ home country of Kosova; located in the Balkan peninsula of southeastern Europe. While only gaining independence in 2008; once you land in the country, you find history that is far beyond the eye can see. From Roman ruins in Ulpiana, to the mountains of Rugova, ending with the young-vibrant nightlife in the cities of Prishtina and Prizren. I’ve experienced a lot whilst over there.
I mainly stay in the capital of Prishtina; a city with calm daytime squares to walk around. Walking through Prishtina central square is a walk where you never get bored regardless how many times you visit. In the daytime it’s like any main square in Europe; with cafes, shops, restaurants, and clubs on all sides. However, at night, the city transforms as the main squares transform as little huts and stands appear selling home made juices and spirits as the people go out to catch up with friends or family while live music is playing. While that’s only in the main squares; other parts of the city have their own little twist. From Kafet e Rakisë & Kafet e Vogla where you can find small pubs and café to relax, to Gërmia park, where you can see the city’s beautiful natural side as you see tree covered hills and mountains. There are little artisanal shops and bazaars throughout the city with handcrafted decorations and clothes.
But I didn’t just stay in Kosova during my many trips. Many times I would cross the border to neighboring Albania to explore other places, whether it be the Albanian capital of Tirana, Durrës, a beach city with an incredible night life, or castles from Kruja, Lezhë, or Butrint. Each with its own fascinating history and culture. There is also North Macedonia; with its beauty such as Matka canyon outside of the capital of Skopje. With its crystal-clear waters and caves to explore; this region in Europe has a lot.
This last trip I spent most of my time with family but there are many other areas to explore in Kosova. You can explore the city of Peja with its Ottoman architecture surrounded by the natural beauty of the Rugova mountains and the White Drin waterfall with its breathtaking scenic views. To vineyards of Rahovec and many historical architectures from medieval churches and cathedrals to ottoman era mosques side by side.
It is fascinating how we can have a history so ancient whilst also being young in age and population. From being the home of iconic figures of all types from Mother Theresa, Granit Xhaka, and Dua Lipa. I am proud to also call this place my home. Të Dua Kosovë!
