UW-Whitewater women’s golf finds themselves less than two weeks away from this year’s WIAC Championship–a title they have maintained every year since 2017.
Behind their sustained success is head coach Andrea Wieland. Although golf is thought of as more of an individual sport, the sport operates differently at the college level.
“Our traditions lie in the ‘keeping it a team first’ attitude,” Wieland said. “Golf is a very individual sport…but we try to make it so you’re competing for each other.”
Golf boasts three seniors on their team this year with Ellie Johnson, Kallie Lux, and Haley Myers all helping in carrying on the team-first attitude that Wieland continues to establish with the program.
“You really do rely on the leadership to continue the traditions and the different things we do at every practice, the different things we do at every tournament,” Wieland said.
The WIAC recognized Myers earlier this month for her efforts in the Wartburg Fall Invite after carding a 76 and a 75, which was good for eighth amongst all golfers that weekend.
Golf opened their year with a first place finish as a team in the Battle on the Border Invite in Bristol, Wisconsin, followed by a seventh-place finish in the Wartburg Fall Invite a week later and a ninth-place finish at the Illinois Wesleyan Fall Invite the next.
“I think our goal is to just try to learn something every time we golf, and to try to get better,” Wieland said. “We’re still learning and getting better. I feel good about it so far.”
The Women’s Golf WIAC Championship begins Friday, Oct. 4 in Reedsburg with play ending that Sunday, followed by the Golfweek Division III Fall Invite a week later in Destin, Florida.
