A night full of music, ranging from baroque violin to French horn, performed by music students who are part of a professional co-ed fraternity called Delta Omicron. This recital was a way for the fraternity members to showcase their musical talent in front of an audience full of peers, friends, and loved ones. But, there is more to Delta Omicron than just music recitals.
Madison Mudrak explained why she joined Delta Omicron.
“I had other people in my French horn studio who were members of the professional fraternity and I wanted to get more comfortable with playing in front of an audience.”
Keri Kelly’s reason for joining Delta Omicron is, “I wanted to be a part of a small community that isn’t tied to an ensemble or studio. I wanted to meet other instrumentalists and new people who are a part of the fraternity.”
Mariah Eichenberg describes her reason for joining.
“Delta Omicron provides more opportunities to meet new people and perform in front of the members and an audience.”
Delta Omicron is a national music professional co-ed fraternity, they provide students with the opportunity to meet alums of the frat, they allow the members to experience ushering recitals, and they provide bake sales before their recital. The frat promotes musicianship and helps its members both musically and studiously. The fraternity’s logo has the colors old rose and pearl gray, the Greek letters ∆ο, and a Latin symbol as well as the frats model.
The frat was created in 1909 but wasn’t always co-ed. The frat started as an all-female organization but changed its bylaws to allow men to join in 1977, by 1979 the first man was initiated into the fraternity.
The fraternity is mainly music, but non-music majors or minors can help support the frat by attending events, helping fund the frat by buying baked goods before their recitals, following up on their social platforms, and you can join the frat as a patron.
Mudrak explains her experience as a member of the frat.
“I enjoy making new friends and hanging out with my friends through the frat. I also enjoy how comfortable I am with performing as I wasn’t before being a member. The only downside is that we have late-night meetings that members are required to attend.”
Kelly describes her experience as being a member of the frat.
“I enjoy the networking opportunities that the frat provides, I like connecting with the alums, other schools, and students in the university who I would pass by before the frat. I like how I developed a friendship with every member of the org. The downside for me is the meetings and the time commitment to the frat.”
Eichenberg describes her experience as being a member of the frat.
“I enjoy making new friends and building my skills as a musician and an educator. It helps build my leadership skills and helps develop my professional skills as well. The only downside to the frat is how small it currently is.”
The frat performs two recitals and a Valentine’s Day fundraiser, the recent racial showcased the musical talent of all the members of the frat. These recitals help the members feel more comfortable being on stage in front of an audience that varies in size. The frat hosts an event called “Big Little Week” that is only for patrons and members but is live streamed through their social media on Instagram and Facebook. The event is where a current member is paired with a new one and gives gifts secretly to them, and the little has to guess which member gifted them the items.
