UW-Whitewater sophomore wrestler Brayden Peet has been one of the most successful wrestlers for the Warhawks since he joined the team. Peet is ranked No. 8 in the 165-pound division in Division III and has excelled in his college career.
Q: What got you into wrestling and what has kept you in it for so many years?
A: As a kid I played football and my dad wanted me to do a sport in the winter to keep me in shape, so I started wrestling. As I got older I started to love wrestling more and more and eventually it became my main sport and I fell in love with it.
Q: Why did you choose Whitewater and what made it a good fit for you?
A: Definitely the campus lifestyle, like how supportive the campus is of athletes and all the sports. And, the team felt like a family and really cared for each other which is really important to me.
Q: Going into this wrestling season what were your goals, both individually and as a team?
A: Individually my goals were to win conference, get top three at regionals and qualify for nationals, because I came up short last year of that goal. My big goal would be to be national champ, but the main goal is to just get All-American this year. As far as team goals we want to win the conference and be top four at nationals so we get a team trophy.
Q: What does it mean to you to be part of the Warhawk athletic culture?
A: I think being a Warhawk means doing the right thing all the time and setting a good example for everybody, because I am not just going out there for me when I wrestle, I am a part of the school and I represent the school.
Q: Do you feel the support of the community when it comes to fans?
A: Yeah, we’re pretty well supported by the community. Obviously wrestling isn’t a huge sport, but we do get support and I think it is nice that we get support, because I feel like most colleges aren’t as in touch with their community as we are.
Peet and the Warhawks have one last chance to compete in front of their home crown. Whitewater will host the WIAC Championships Saturday, Feb. 15 inside Kachel Gymnasium.
