UW-Whitewater junior Michael S. Sommerfeldt, 21, was arrested on Nov. 7 on multiple felony drug-related charges, according to a Whitewater Police Department press release.
According to the release, Whitewater Police seized cash and drugs worth an estimated $13,000.
The arrest was made at 761 W. Main St. No. 306 after police received information drugs were being used and sold at the apartment by the residents.
Police confiscated $4,766 in cash, 94.8 grams of hash oil with an estimated street value of $3,800, 50.6 grams of hashish with an estimated street value of $1,500, 142 grams of marijuana with an estimated street value of $2,850 and 3.7 grams of dried mushrooms with an estimated street value of $70, according to the release.
Whitewater Police Department Capt. Brian Uhl said these arrests should show the community illegal drugs and drug trafficking will not be tolerated.
“I believe that this type of investigation and the resulting arrest sends a strong message that illegal drugs and drug trafficking are not tolerated in Whitewater,” Uhl said. “[The Whitewater Police Department] also hope[s] that it acts as a deterrent to those who might otherwise engage in criminal conduct and drug trafficking in our community.”
Uhl said Whitewater is a safe community.
“I don’t believe this is necessarily an isolated incident,” Uhl said. “I think there are a small amount of people in the community who sell drugs as a means of income. I believe Whitewater is still a safe city. When [the Whitewater Police Department] receives tips, like we did with this case, we investigate them.”
All charges are being deferred to the Walworth County District Attorney’s Office for prosecution.
“Drug use and the illegal sale of narcotics have the potential to present a public safety risk and create a negative impact on our community,” Uhl said. “We are looking forward to forging a united partnership with the citizen’s of Whitewater and we need [everyone’s] involvement.”
