UW-Whitewater alumnus Nick Zoulek came to perform for music students as an inspiration on April 24. He’s a saxophone player and produces his own music. He played some of those songs during the performance and hoped students would walk in his footsteps.
“It’ll be interesting for music students to see somebody who graduated from this program and what they’re doing now,” said professor Matt Sintchak.
Praised for his creativity, Zoulek kept consistent with the variety theme in his performance, about the previous sonict ensemble. It leaves the audience with the intention of feeling mixed emotions. From happy to sad, inspirational to obscure, they got it all.
With most of his music being processed through a computer, Sintchak said it’s different from what people may have expected.
It took Zoulek an extra year to graduate so he could prepare to study overseas in France. After two years in Paris, he got his doctorate from Bowling Green State. Sintchak described his experience teaching him in a positive light, calling him a great student, hard worker and active in his field.
Before the performance, he gave lessons to music majors. As both a performer and educator, his goal was not just to put on a good show, but also to teach people something new.
