As the NCAA Division-III playoffs come to an end, it’s exciting that our beloved Warhawks are one of four teams left. If they win one more game, they will head to their seventh straight Amos Alonzo Stagg Bowl.
For many of the fans here, it’s almost expected for the team to reach that pinnacle. After all, they haven’t lost a game since 2008. Most of us probably don’t remember that loss or weren’t even in school then, so winning is a tradition here.
Throughout the whole season, the Warhawks have had great support. They led Division-III in home attendance per game in the regular season for the first time ever with an average of just over 8,000 people. That is almost a 2,000 person increase from one season ago.
It’s obvious success brings more fans in, but here is another statistic. After having over 8,000 attendees per game in the regular season, so far in the playoffs, Perkins Stadium has brought in a total of 3,363 people in just three games.
It doesn’t make sense, right?
One would think as the ’Hawks got into the playoffs, more people would come to the games, especially when they offer free tickets. I know the weather hasn’t been the best and one week was Thanksgiving weekend, but that is not an excuse for such a low number. It’s embarrassing. I’ve heard time and time again that students would rather just sit in their dorm or apartment to watch the game, or it will just be a “blowout.”
The game on Saturday against St. Thomas will be the last home game of the season. If they win, they will head to the Stagg Bowl. Forget the weather, forget watching it on tv – come out and support the Warhawks because it will be a good game.
