The wrestling team’s four-match winning streak ended Friday night in Wisconsin Dells losing to St. John’s University 22-16 and losing to Coe College 33-6.
They look to redeem themselves at a weekend invite in Springfield, Ill. on Jan. 7 and 8.
While the invite in the Dells might not have went as planned, there is no reason the team should hang their heads, head coach Tim Fader said.
“Coe is a real strong opponent, they are ranked third in the country,” Fader said.
Most of the Warhawks’ losses this season have come against schools ranked in the top five in the country, Fader said. The team has already battled high ranked opponents within the conference such as UW-Eau Claire and UW-La Crosse.
“We have competed against tough competition, the guys have been put to the test early in the first half of the season,” Fader said.
While they lost both matches in the Dells as a team, a few individuals had good performances. Junior Jake Fredricksen was matched up against an opponent ranked ahead of him two different times and he managed to win both matches.
Senior All-American Corey Anderson fell behind one opponent 7-1 early before coming back to tie it up at 10 before the third period ended.
He ultimately finished his opponent off 12-10 in overtime, bringing his overall record to 14-1 on the season. Conditioning has a lot to do with Anderson’s success.
“We never stop going, we never stop wrestling,” Anderson said. “We out condition them. I always want to go a full seven minutes without getting tired.”
Now that the season is about halfway done, some wrestlers are getting healthier and others are returning after being academically ineligible, which will bring depth to the team, Anderson said.
“We definitely have a chance to make a run at a title,” Anderson said.
Fader said the team will first focus on winning conference.
“Everything is about winning the conference championship on Feb. 26,” Fader said. “As host, we really look forward to this date. I feel we are going to be in the hunt for a conference title, but we have to get a lot better before the 26th.”
