They just can’t beat them.
The UW-Whitewater men’s basketball team fell 71-60 to UW-Stevens Point Wednesday in front of a packed Kachel Gymnasium.
The Pointers have now given the No. 2 ranked Warhawks its only two losses of the season.
The Pointers took control of the game right away, pulling out to a 35-26 lead at halftime.
The ‘Hawks started to make a comeback early in the second half, and eventually took a 41-40 lead with just over 13 minutes left after junior Luke Knoble hit two free throws. Trailling 45-40 with 11 minutes left, the Pointers didn’t let the ‘Hawks lead last long. Two minutes later, a three-pointer by Pointers Joe Ritchay gave them a 46-45 lead.
At that point, the Pointers never looked back.
The Pointers shot 50 percent from the field compared to the Warhawks 38 percent.
Pointers Tyler Tillema led the game with 16 points along with seven rebounds and five assits.
For the ‘Hawks, Alex Merg led with 12 points. Chris Davis, who missed the last two games because of an injury, was limited to only 10 points.
The ‘Hawks will look to bounce back Saturday when they host UW-Eau Claire at 7 p.m.
